State Shi is a Managing Director and Head of Alvarez & Marsal’s Tax practice in Asia. With more than 12 years of experience in international taxation and business advisory assistance in China, the U.S. and Australia, Mr. Shi has in-depth knowledge of providing multinational, private equity and domestic clients with M&A tax-related services, including: foreign and domestic merger and acquisition activities of Chinese corporate entities; tax efficient inbound and outbound investment structures; and cross-border funding structures.

Mr. Shi has worked with clients across a range of industries including energy and natural resources, TMT, consumer goods and retail, industrial markets and property and infrastructure sectors.

Prior to joining A&M, Mr. Shi was an M&A Tax Partner and Lead Tax Partner of TMT Sector with KPMG China. He has spent more than 12 years with KPMG, including five years with KPMG Australia and six months with KPMG US. Mr. Shi has accumulated significant experience of international taxation, innovative tax structure planning for M&A and business restructuring activities and addressing operational tax issues through practical solutions.

Both in his current role at A&M and as a leader of KPMG’s M&A Tax Practice in China, Mr. Shi has served many of global, regional and domestic businesses in China. Working with those clients, Mr. Shi has led many tax structuring and due diligence projects across a range of industry sectors, including a number of high profile outbound assignments and take-private transactions of Chinese TMT companies in past years.

Mr. Shi is a frequent speaker on topical tax issues at various business events. He is also a lecturer of Chinese International Taxation for the Master of International Taxation course at Law School, University of Sydney.

Mr. Shi earned a master’s degree in international taxation from Law School of Sydney University and a bachelor’s degree in international business from Beijing Foreign Studies University.
