Mr. Unell has over 18 years of real estate experience in the commercial real estate banking field. He has extensive experience in loan origination, appraisal review, loan workout, liquidation of assets, credit policy, loan valuation, risk rating, commercial and homebuilder real estate underwriting, and asset monitoring/management. He has worked on most real estate asset classes and his primary focus has been on residential development and mixed-use projects consisting of golf course, multi-family, and hospitality and retail components.
His experience includes: analyzed allegations of a breached right of first refusal and the cost associated with obtaining market rate financing; retained by the advisory board of a land fund to assess the disposition strategy of over $250 million of assets; provided real estate support to the CLO of a 125+ restaurant chain in bankruptcy including lease negotiations and store closures; provided third-party reviews of appraisals, Phase I ESA, and Property Condition reports for CMBS lenders, life insurance lenders and banks; and evaluated the investment model and returns for a real estate private equity firm.
Prior to joining A&M, Mr. Unell was a Senior Vice President at Bank of America. In their Real Estate Managed Assets group, he developed and managed the workout and disposition strategies for commercial real estate assets. He oversaw the resolution of over $3 billion of distressed real estate assets including several significant $100 million+ syndicated loan facilities with financial institutions across the U.S. consisting of various asset types including office, industrial, hospitality and residential development. Previously, he served as a Client Manager in the Commercial Real Estate Banking group.
Mr. Unell earned a BBA with a concentration in real estate from the Terry College of Business at The University of Georgia.
