Michael Stewart is a Managing Director at Alvarez & Marsal Canada ULC, with nearly twenty years of experience in providing restructuring advice to corporations and their stakeholders across a broad spectrum of industries.

Prior to joining A&M, Mr. Stewart spent six years as a Managing Director at CIBC Capital Markets in Toronto where he was the Head of Recapitalization & Restructuring and six years at Jefferies & Company as a Senior Vice-President in New York City. During his tenure Mr. Stewart gained significant transaction experience in both Canada and the US on advising debtors and creditors in all aspects of corporate restructurings ranging from CBCA debt recapitalization and exchange offers to CCAA and Chapter 11 restructurings.    

Mr. Stewart began his career in KPMG’s restructuring group in the Toronto office where he became a licensed insolvency trustee and worked on numerous mandates as court-appointed monitor or receiver. 

Some of his notable transactions have included acting as financial advisor to North American Palladium, a Canadian palladium producer, in its CBCA debt recapitalization; financial advisor to Great Basin Gold, a US and South African gold producer, in its concurrent CCAA and Chapter 11 proceedings;  financial advisor to GasFrac, a US and Canadian pressure pumper and fracking company, in its CCAA SISP process;  financial advisor to Compton Petroleum, a Canadian natural gas E&P company, in its CBCA debt recapitalization; financial advisor to CNOOC in its acquisition of Opti Canada, a Canadian oils sands producer, pursuant to a CCAA filing; financial advisor to certain creditors of Abitibi-Bowater, a Canadian pulp and paper manufacturer, in its concurrent CCAA and Chapter 11 proceedings; and financial advisor to certain creditors of Quebecor World, a North American printing company, in its concurrent CCAA and Chapter 11 proceedings.

Mr. Stewart earned a bachelor’s degree in commerce with distinction from the University of Toronto. He is a Chartered Accountant, Chartered Insolvency and Restructuring Professional, and became a Licensed Insolvency Trustee in 2003. Mr. Stewart is a frequent speaker at industry events and conferences, is a member of the Canadian Association of Insolvency and Restructuring Professionals and has been on the Board of Directors of the Turnaround Management Association, Toronto Chapter from 2013 to 2016, most recently serving as Vice-President.
