John Makuch is a Managing Director with Alvarez & Marsal in Atlanta. During the past 25 years, Mr. Makuch has assisted both public and privately-held firms across a wide range of industries executing financial and operational performance improvement initiatives. He has performed these services as either a consultant or as several C-suite positions.

Mr. Makuch led a team and served as the Interim CFO of Angelica Corporation, a provider of linen service to the healthcare industry. This engagement concluded with the sale of substantially all of the company’s assets to an affiliate of KKR.

In March 2016, Mr. Makuch completed nearly a year of service as the Interim CFO of Campus Crest Communities (NYSE: CCG), a publicly traded student housing real estate investment trust (REIT). During his time at CCG, Mr. Makuch assisted the company return to an on-time SEC filing schedule, worked with secured / unsecured lenders to gain support for a plan the which resulted in the acquisition of the company by a private equity buyer. Mr. Makuch assisted with the outsourcing of property operations to a third party and the wind-down of the corporate office per the terms of the sale transaction as well as the sale of various non-core assets.

Prior to CCG, he served as the Interim COO for a wholesaler of women’s apparel that sold its branded and private-label products to department stores, mass-market retailers, clubs, discounters and various boutique chains.

Mr. Makuch served as CEO and CFO for an online education service provider enrolling approximately 60,000 students. He managed liquidity, developed a board reporting package including operational KPIs and financial metrics, developed a plan to overhaul a home-grown IT department, restructured operations to improve customer acquisition / retention and successfully sold the company to a private equity sponsor.

Other notable assignments include: serving as the interim Treasurer / VP of Finance of a $4-billion, 400-store grocery chain, serving as the interim CFO for Grady Health System a “safety-net” system with a $650MM annual budget and serving as the interim Controller of Healthsouth Corporation, a $4-billion healthcare provider.

Mr. Makuch earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting with honors from Villanova University. He is a Certified Public Accountant (Inactive) licensed in the state of Georgia. He has passed the Certified Turnaround Professional and Certified Insolvency and Restructuring Advisor exams.
