John Makuch is a Managing Director with Alvarez & Marsal in Atlanta. Over the past 22 years, he has assisted public and private firms across a range of industries in executing financial and operational performance improvement initiatives. Mr. Makuch has performed these services as a consultant or by serving as an interim officer, including roles as Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Chief Operating Officer (COO), Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Chief Restructuring Officer (CRO), Controller and Treasurer.

Mr. Makuch currently serves as the Interim CFO of Campus Crest Communities, Inc. (NYSE: CCG) a student-housing REIT located in Charlotte NC.

Mr. Makuch served for approximately one year as the Interim COO for a privately-held $1 billion wholesaler of women’s apparel that sold its branded and private-label products to department stores, mass-market retailers, clubs, discounters and boutique chains.

He served as CEO and CFO of Ashworth College, a privately-held , Atlanta-based direct marketing company offering online education and serving approximately 60,000 students. He managed liquidity; developed a board reporting package, including operational key performance indicators (KPIs) and financial metrics; developed a plan and negotiated contracts to overhaul the IT infrastructure; restructured operations to improve customer acquisition and retention; and successfully sold the company to a private equity sponsor.

He served as the CFO to The Grady Health System, a $600 million public hospital system located in Atlanta, Georgia.  In this capacity he managed the financial reporting and treasury functions of the organization and worked with political, business and community leaders to restructure the organization to instill public confidence and financial support.

He was also engaged by a private equity sponsor to serve as the interim Treasurer of a $4 billion, 400-store grocery chain created by acquiring two regional chains from a large public entity. Mr. Makuch carved out the treasury operations from the former parent company and established a stand-alone treasury  function for the newly-formed organization.

Mr. Makuch served as the interim Controller of Healthsouth Corporation, a $4 billion healthcare provider, in the wake of an FBI raid of the headquarters resulting from allegations of massive financial fraud. This role included developing internal financial reporting and revamping reporting/management of operational metrics for over 1,500 service locations.

Mr. Makuch has also served as an advisor to numerous clients for performance improvement engagements or operational and financial restructurings, both in and out of court.

Mr. Makuch earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting with honors from Villanova University. He is a Certified Public Accountant (inactive) licensed in Georgia. He has passed the Certified Turnaround Professional and Certified Insolvency and Restructuring Advisor exams.
